The English name is Polysulfone (referred to as PSF or PSU), including different types such as ordinary bisphenol A-type polysulfone (PSU), polyarylene Definition of sulfone (PASF), polyethersulfone (PES), polyphenylene sulfone resin (PPSU), etc.
1. Physical properties: density, melting point, appearance, etc.
Appearance and Density
Slightly amber-colored amorphous transparent or translucent polymer.
Density is generally 1.24 – 1.35 g/cm3.
melting point
The melting point is greater than 280℃.
Mechanical properties
1. High hardness and impact strength. It has high rigidity, wear resistance and high strength, and can maintain good mechanical properties even at high temperatures.
2. After glass fiber reinforcement and modification, the wear resistance can be greatly improved.
3. Under the pressure of 20.7MPa at room temperature, after 10,000h, the creep (strain) is only 1%; under the stress of 210°F (about 98.9℃) and 2.07MPa, after one year, the total strain is still less than 2%.
4. The tensile impact strength can reach 200.
Dimensional stability
1. Small molding shrinkage.
2. Resistant to hydrolysis. In order to maintain long-term transparency and impact resistance in 180°F (approximately 82.2°C) water, the maximum pressure it can withstand is 3.5MPa (static load) and 6.9MPa (intermittent load). The lower the temperature of the water, the higher the pressure it withstands. For example, at 72°F (about 22.2℃), the maximum pressure it can withstand is 20.7MPa (static load) and 24.7MPa (intermittent load).
Other aspects
1. High hardness and impact strength. It has high rigidity, wear resistance and high strength, that is, the water absorption rate is 0.2 – 0.4%, and it needs to be fully dried before use.
2. Resistant to corrosion by inorganic acids, alkalis and salts, but not resistant to aromatic hydrocarbons and halogenated hydrocarbons.
3. Poor UV resistance and weather resistance.
4. Poor fatigue strength is the main disadvantage.
2. Mechanical properties : tensile strength, impact strength, hardness, creep properties, etc.
The following are the typical mechanical properties and related data of polysulfone materials (different types of polysulfone, whether they have been modified, testing conditions and other factors will cause differences in performance):
Strength
Tensile strength: Unreinforced polysulfone usually has a higher tensile strength, generally around 70 – 90MPa. The tensile strength can be further greatly improved after being reinforced with glass fiber or the like.
Bending strength: It is also at a high level. For example, the bending strength of bisphenol A polysulfone (PSU) can exceed that of many ordinary engineering plastics.
Rigidity
Modulus: Has a relatively high modulus, reflecting good rigidity. For example, its flexural modulus is around 2-3GPa (polyethersulfone PES).
Impact toughness
Impact strength: Generally, the impact strength of polysulfone is acceptable. For example, the impact strength of pure polysulfone is within a certain range (such as 10-20kJ/m²). But compared with some engineering plastics with outstanding toughness, it is not high.
However, the impact strength and elongation can be improved by blending with ABS and other modifications.
Creep resistance
Under the pressure of 20.7MPa at room temperature, after 10,000h, the creep (strain) of polysulfone is only 1%; under the stress of 210°F (about 99℃) and 2.07MPa, after one year, the total strain is still less than 2% . After long-term use at 300°F (approximately 149°C), the strength and modulus of polysulfone increase by 10%.
Other aspects:
Wear resistance: Polysulfone itself has certain wear resistance, and the wear resistance of the material can be greatly improved through glass fiber reinforcement and modification.
Fatigue strength: The relatively poor fatigue strength is one of its main disadvantages.
3. Thermal properties : thermal distortion temperature, long-term use temperature range, thermal stability, annealing effect, etc.
The thermal properties of polysulfone materials have the following characteristics:
1. Long-term use temperature: Generally 160℃, it can maintain stable performance for a long time at this temperature.
2. Short-term use temperature: up to 190°C, it can withstand higher temperatures in a short period of time without significant performance degradation.
3. Thermal stability: It has high thermal stability and can be used for a long time in the range of -100 – 175℃.
4. Heat distortion temperature: The heat distortion temperature of ordinary polysulfone is usually about 175°C.
5. Glass transition temperature: approximately 185°C.
The good thermal properties of polysulfone materials give them certain advantages in applications in high-temperature environments, such as in automobiles, electronics and electrical fields. However, in practical applications, its specific thermal properties will also be affected by factors such as material formulation and processing technology.
4. Electrical properties: dielectric constant, dielectric strength, volume resistivity, etc.
Polysulfone materials have the following characteristics in terms of electrical properties:
1. Dielectric constant: The dielectric constant of polysulfone materials is relatively low and stable over a wide temperature and frequency range. This means that it is less capable of storing electrical energy in an electric field, reducing energy loss.
2. Loss factor: It is usually at a low level, which shows that under the action of AC electric field, the energy loss of polysulfone materials due to internal polarization is small.
3. Dielectric strength: It has high dielectric strength, that is, it can withstand high electric field intensity without being broken down, thus ensuring its insulation performance in electrical equipment.
4. Volume resistivity: Larger volume resistivity means greater resistance to current passing through the material, which can effectively prevent current leakage and provide good electrical insulation.
In short, the excellent electrical properties of polysulfone materials make them widely used in electronics, electrical and other fields, such as manufacturing electrical components, wire and cable insulation layers, etc. However, its electrical properties will also be affected by processing conditions, additives and other factors.
5. Chemical stability, acid and alkali resistance, solvent resistance, etc.
Polysulfone materials have good chemical stability, which is mainly reflected in the following aspects:
1. Acid and alkali resistance: It can withstand the erosion of inorganic acids, alkali and salt solutions. It can remain stable in strong acid and strong alkali environments within a certain concentration and temperature range.
2. Resistance to organic solvents: It has certain resistance to some organic solvents such as alcohols and ketones, but is not resistant to strong solvents such as aromatic hydrocarbons and halogenated hydrocarbons.
3. Antioxidant: It has a certain antioxidant ability and can resist the effects of oxidizing substances to a certain extent.
However, it should be noted that the chemical stability of polysulfone materials is not absolute, and performance changes or degradation may still occur under extreme conditions or when exposed to certain chemicals for a long time.
6. Optical properties: transparency, etc.
Polysulfone materials have the following characteristics in terms of optical properties:
1. Transparency: Usually transparent or translucent materials with good light transmittance.
2. Haze: The haze is relatively low and can provide clearer visual effects.
3. Refractive index: The refractive index is moderate, about 1.63.
Color stability: Under normal use conditions, the color changes little and can maintain good appearance stability.
These optical properties of polysulfone materials make it have certain application potential in the manufacturing of optical devices and lighting equipment. However, it should be noted that its optical performance may be affected by factors such as material purity and processing technology.
7. Other properties: such as radiation resistance, flame resistance, self-extinguishing, hydrolysis resistance, dimensional stability, molding shrinkage, health and safety, etc.
In addition to the common properties mentioned above, polysulfone materials also have the following performance characteristics:
1. Radiation resistance: It can maintain good performance stability under a certain dose of radiation environment.
2. Biocompatibility: It is biocompatible to a certain extent and can be used in certain medical fields.
3. Processing performance: It has good processing performance and can be molded and processed through various methods such as injection molding and extrusion.
4. Flame retardancy: It has certain flame retardant properties, but in some occasions with higher flame retardant requirements, flame retardants may need to be added for modification.
5. Breathability: It has certain barrier properties against gases, but it is not as good as some specialized barrier materials.
6. Weather resistance: The weather resistance is average. Gradual deterioration of performance may occur after long-term exposure to outdoor environment.
These performance characteristics allow polysulfone materials to exert their unique advantages in different application fields, but at the same time, their performance also needs to be further optimized and improved according to specific application requirements.
