Application scenarios for biodegradable products in the agricultural sector include degradable plastic films, pesticide/fertiliser sustained release materials, seedling pots and plant fixing clips, etc. However, the industry still faces challenges such as the implementation of policies and regulations, technological innovation and material improvements (such as the development of PHA and PCL in specific scenarios such as high humidity environments), cost effectiveness, marketing promotion and supply chain support.

It is reported that on 4 February, BASF announced the development of an industrially compostable biopolymer called ecovio 60 IA 1552 and its application in plant fixing clips. The main materials of this product on the market are PP and PE.

And just in May, BASF launched a certified compostable biopolymer ecovio® for plant ties.

The use of fixed clips is very common in fruit and vegetable growing, especially for grapes/melons and fruit. The market capacity in Europe is about 13,000 tonnes per year and in Germany about 2,000 tonnes per year (this calculation is based on the number of 190,000 tonnes of plant staples and auxiliary tools worldwide, proportionally calculated, 7% in the EU and 16% in Germany).

At present, biodegradable plastic plant clips often lack biodegradation certificates. Whether they degrade only in industrial compost, household compost or in soil remains to be seen. As these products end up in different waste streams, the lack of clear certification is a serious problem.

From a technical point of view, plant fixing clips need to be weather resistant (UV, water, heat, frost). Depending on the model, they must be moderately stiff or moderately rigid. They are highly ductile, i.e. they can be bent, but are constantly breaking. For example, if farmers or wine growers have problems, they need to be tough. Use a lawn mower to go through the rows. The stress relief should be as slow as possible. Due to the lack of complex geometry or other conditions, the manufacturing process (injection moulding) of batch products is relatively low.

It goes without saying that BASF ecovio® bioplastics is a fully compostable high-quality polymer. It is made from BASF’s biodegradable polymers ecoflex® (PBAT) and polylactic acid (PLA).

From a performance perspective, ecovio 60 IA 1552 is a high performance biopolymer with good strength and flexibility that can adapt to various conditions in the greenhouse environment, including temperature fluctuations, humidity changes and ultraviolet radiation; the material has passed EN 13432 industrial composting certification and is fully biodegradable in industrial composting facilities to avoid microplastic contamination. Tests show that it degrades in 6 weeks with plant residues and is suitable for the circular economy; in addition, using clips made from this material can simplify waste treatment, reduce treatment costs and provide farmers with a more economical and environmentally friendly choice.

In terms of production and safety, ecovio 60 IA 1552 can be produced using standard PE or PP plant clip production equipment. In addition, the material has been approved for use in contact with food in accordance with FDA and European regulations.

ecovio 60 IA 1552 plant clips further complement BASF’s portfolio of biopolymer products for sustainable agriculture and food production; for example, the industrially compostable ecovio T 2206 can be used to make strapping rope, while the soil degradable ecovio M 2351 can be used to make agricultural mulch; these products help to increase crop yields, conserve resources and reduce environmental impact; BASF is actively promoting a more sustainable agriculture by providing these innovative solutions.
